When it comes to the security of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), the UL291 standard plays a critical role. This standard defines the security requirements for ATMs, ensuring that they are resistant to various types of attacks. One of the key aspects of the UL291 standard is the security grade, which is divided into three levels: Business Hours, Level 1, and Level 3.

Business Hours

The Business Hours grade is based on the lowest security standard of the European standard CEN, known as CEN L. This means that ATMs with this grade should only operate during business hours. Typically, these ATMs are installed inside stores or bank branches where sufficient security measures are implemented. While they may not have the same level of resistance as higher grades, they are still designed to deter and prevent unauthorized access.

Level 1

The Level 1 grade is designed to provide a higher level of security compared to Business Hours ATMs. These ATMs should be able to resist attacks using cutting tools, crowbars, shafts, and heavy-duty tools for more than 30 minutes. Level 1 ATMs are usually installed either inside or outside in places frequented by many people, such as department stores, supermarkets, shopping malls, and other high-traffic areas. The goal is to ensure that these machines can withstand attempted attacks and provide a secure environment for users.

Level 3

Level 3 is the highest security grade defined by the UL291 standard. ATMs with this grade should be able to resist similar attacks as Level 1 ATMs, but for a longer duration of more than 60 minutes. These ATMs are typically used in places where there is a high possibility of damage or targeted attacks. To enhance security, Level 3 ATMs often have reinforced products in the form of bars attached to strengthen security when attacked with tools like crowbars.

It’s worth noting that there used to be a Level 2 grade in the UL291 standard, which provided an even higher level of protection. However, this grade was removed from the 2004 edition of the standard, and the focus shifted to the Business Hours, Level 1, and Level 3 grades.

Overall, the UL291 standard and its security grades play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of ATMs. By adhering to these standards, ATM manufacturers and operators can provide a secure environment for users and protect against potential attacks.
